All-optical telecom network faces slowing economy, excess capacity
Article Abstract:
Advances in optical switch technology have brought telecom equipment makers and service providers to the brink of implementing an all optical network. Until recently, telecom signals sent over the high-capacity fiber optic cables had to be converted from light back to electrical impulses, in order to be switched or routed. Optical switches do away with the conversion process. However, because of the decline in the dot-com sector, coupled with excess capacity and narrowing margins for telecom services, the pace of optical switch deployment has slowed. Near term, the high traffic switch points in large networks will get the technology first.

Judge rules Palm Inc., 3Com infringed Xerox patent on handwriting recognition
Article Abstract:
A U.S. District Court judge has ruled that the handwriting-recognition technology used in Palm Inc.'s 'Graffiti' organizers is infringing on a valid patent held by Xerox. The decision is a major blow to Palm as it has used the technology in virtually all its products since 1996. The case will now move to the penalty phase where a remedy will be determined.
