U S West, union set pact, ending strike
Article Abstract:
U S West has reached a tentative pact with the Communications Workers of America to end a 15-day strike by 34,000 employees. The agreement lowers mandatory overtime for union workers but allows U S West to implement its controversial 'pay for performance plan.' Financial conditions of the three-year contract call for wage and pension increases of 10.9% and 21% respectively. The deal is contingent on ratification by union members, who include telephone operators and technicians. U S West's 'pay for performance' plan gives network technicians the option of forfeiting their annual wage increases in exchange for annual bonuses that could reach 20% of their base pay. By comparison, the original U S West plan entailed extending the option to around 7,100 network technicians and requiring it for newcomers.

Recess called in strike talks with U S West
Article Abstract:
A federal mediator asks for a recess in strike talks being held between U S West and the Communications Workers of America (CWA). Approximately 34,000 telephone workers are currently involved. The mediator wants both sides to consider concessions and proposals, but a CWA spokesman says the parties are 'miles apart.' U S West officials say they have offered a package that includes a 17.5% wage increase over five years, together with a 20% increase in pension benefits. The union spokesman says the company has failed to address CWA concerns. For example, the union wants to ensure that union employees participate in rapidly expanding areas of telecommunication such as Internet and wireless services.
