America Online kicks off latest drive for members with new wave of disks
Article Abstract:
America Online (AOL) today is introducing the latest round of marketing free disks through various mailing outlets. Plans call for the leading online service to distribute a million disks per week in places such as mailboxes and cereral boxes by mid-Oct 1998. The new AOL 4.0 software, which the company said is used by more than five million of its subscribers, is featured on the CD-ROMs. AOL is counting on the marketing campaign not only to widen its more than 13-million-member customer base but also to bolster its advertising revenue from electronic commerce. User-friendly AOL 4.0 will overcome a tightening market if it can reach novice customers, the company said. AOL has drawn criticism for previous direct-mail efforts, including the 1996 campaign that circulated an estimated 150 million disks.

For those who scoff at Internet commerce, here's a hot market; raking in millions, sex sites use old-fashioned porn and cutting-edge tech; lessons for the mainstream
Article Abstract:
Adult Web site are doing amazingly well on the Internet, compared to other Internet sites. One reason is that users are able to view pornographic material without leaving their own home, or office. Another is the advertising tactics that the sites use. These sites sharply focus their marketing, placing advertisements in discussion groups that emphasize sexual topics. The sites also charge admission whereas most Web sites are free and they also increase their revenue by selling accessory services. The government does not appear to be planning a crackdown on pornographic Web sites. Recent federal court rulings have guaranteed the Internet the broadest possible First Amendment Rights.

The clout of the online critic; good reviews, and most are, mean megasales
Article Abstract:
Within the past year, professional reviewers have greeted customers early in the shopping process with recommendations and an easy link to the purchase. Amazon.com has been a huge success at online criticism, seeing freshly reviewed products zoom from the bottom of the sales charts to the top within hours. That so many of the reviews are mostly puff pieces provokes much criticism. And it's hard to know what is really a review or a subtly-paid endorsement.
