Gates, U.S. meet as new lawsuit looms
Article Abstract:
Microsoft Chmn Bill Gates asked senior Justice Department officials for a meeting with Joel Klein to detail the specifics of a new possible antitrust action against the software giant. Klein, assistant attorney general for antitrust, is nearing a decision on whether to file a broad Sherman Act antitrust case against Microsoft. Such a lawsuit would charge Microsoft with illegally leveraging its Windows monopoly to attack a new market that features Netscape's Internet software, according to insiders. Neither Microsoft nor the Justice Department disclosed specifics of the meeting, including whether Gates would extend concessions that might settle the matter. Gates defended the Jun 1998 release of Windows 98, arguing that a governmental delay or block would weaken the the most important domestic sector and strengthen foreign companies.
