An examination of the influence of industry structure on eight alternative measures of new venture performance for high potential independent new ventures

Article Abstract:

A sample of 199 independent new ventures was used to examine the influence of the stage of the industry life cycle, industrial concentration, barriers to entry of new ventures and product differentiation on change in sales, sales statistics, net profit, gross earnings, return on sale, return on assets, return on investment and return on equity. Of the four industry structural determinants, the stage of the life cycle was found to have the greatest influence on the performance of a new venture.
