An experimental investigation into the efficacy of Visual Interactive Simulation
Article Abstract:
Visual interactive simulation (VIS) is a simulation methodology that allows users to suspend the execution of the simulation model, change one or more parameters and resume model execution with the help of a graphic display or iconic animation. Some proponents of VIS ad VIS software advocate the use of this simulation approach for experimental analysis. However, supporters of formal output analysis consider the use of VIS as dangerous and irresponsible. A laboratory experiment is conducted to examine the effectiveness of VIS to model experimentation. Fifty one subjects are provided with a VIS to solve a case study based around the allocation of trucks in a mining operation. The results show that the subjects performed worse than when they did not use VIS and the use of animated display is associated with more efficient use of VIS rather than with correct solutions.

Simulation designs for quadratic response surface models in the presence of model misspecification
Article Abstract:
The choice of simulation designs forestimating second-order response meta-surfaces is examined in the context of bias due to model misspecification. In contrast to optimal design theory, the inclusion of unfitted third-order terms and traditional variance concerns introduce the possibility of biasedness. Box and Draper's average mean squared error of predicted response is thus used as the performance measure to examine four response surface experimental plans. These are central composite designs, Box-Behnken plans, three-level factorial experiments and small central composite designs, which are compared according to three different number assignment strategies, namely, the use of a unique set of streams for each design point, a common set of streams for all, or a combination of either.
