Interest rate cuts by the Federal Reserve Board have allowed stocks in the apparel industry to gain strength in early 20001 in spite of a poor selling season in the year 2000. However, the expected slowdown in the US economy will make times more difficult for many in the industry. Investors should be cautious when considering these issues.

Economic conditions for the apparel industry were weak during the 1st qtr of the year 2001 with slow sales due to poor weather and other factors. The industry is seeking sales avenues in other than department stores as a result. Several of these stocks are timely for 2001 and 2002, but the industry can also be volatile.
