Apple adopts 'open source' code strategy
Article Abstract:
Apple Computer Inc. has adopted an open open source code strategy in the distribution of it's new UNIX-based OS X operating system, called Darwin, for the computer servers it markets. Prior to this, Apple, and most other marketers of operating systems, exercised their proprietary rights in keeping operating system source code secret, only allowing software developers information they had to have to develop applications to run under the O.S.'s. With the increasing popularity of the Linux operating system, the advantages of open source code have made themselves evident. Programmers are enabled to fix bugs as they find them, making the systems more stable. The same applies to bugs affecting security. Open source code allows users more confidence. The operating system makers are able to take advantage of fixes developed by their customers, resulting in an improved product at no cost to them. Apple hopes that this new policy will give them an edge in their competition for the server and server software market against leaders Compaq Computer, Dell Computer, Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems and I.B.M.

Novell, once foundering, finds a way to coexist with Microsoft
Article Abstract:
Novell, which until recently seemed in danger of being overwhelmed by Microsoft, is gaining renewed strength. On Sep 14, 1998, nearly a month ahead of schedule, Novell will announce Version 5.0 of Netware, and test versions have been well received. Meanwhile, Microsoft's Windows 5.0 is delayed and could be released as much as a year behind its schedule. Novell is also doing well financially. The company reported 3rd qtr profit of $27 million in Aug 1998, compared with a $122 million loss a year previously, and sales spiked 15%. Industry observers say the increase in sales is an indication that customers are taking the Windows NT 5.0 delay as a reason to renew their commitment to Novell.
