Apple Computer net fell 70% for third quarter

Apple Computer's fiscal third quarter earnings loss of 70% over last year's 3rd quarter is still profitable, the second quarter in a row to be profitable. The company's forcast for the next couple quarters is modest. The new iBook laptop has helped sales and the company's new retail stores are being touted as successful. Apple plans to open 23 stores by the end of 2001.

Palm posts steep loss for fiscal quarter

Palm Inc. has posted a loss of $25.2 million for its fiscal second quarter ending Nov. 30, 2001. In the same period last year, Palm recorded a net income of $20.3 million. Sales for this period were $290.6 million, down from last year's figure of $522.2 million. Palm has had a net loss now for four quarters running but the company expects to be close to breaking even by the fiscal fourth quarter.The company shipped 1.5 million hand-held devices in its fiscal second quarter.
