Apple restores its shine

Apple Computer Inc. has a renewed focus on being a global company after a return to innovation and creativity propelled the company to continuing profits. Apple's 2Q 1999 revenue to March 29, 1999, was $153 billion, up 9% from 2Q 1998. Apple has had six consecutive profitable quarters after a 2Q 1997 loss of $708 million. A return to innovation has taken place with the introduction of the Mac G3 in November 1997 and the iMac in July 1998. Apple is now concentrating on four product groups in four regions: Japan, America, Europe, and Asia-Pacific.

The Growth of the laptop computer market is far outstripping that of desktop computers, demonstrating the attraction to organisations and individuals of becoming more mobile. For the professional market, particularly among medium to large enterprises, the strong growth of mobile PCs has also been attributed to the increasing acceptance of wireless technologies and decreasing set-up costs of wireless local area networks.
