Apple's Gassee plans to resign as shake-up continues
Article Abstract:
The major corporate shake-up at Apple Computer Inc continues as sources say Jean-Louis Gassee will resign his position as the number two man at the microcomputer company. Gassee's resignation is the second in recent weeks, following on the heels of Allan Z. Loren's departure, leaving only CEO John Sculley remaining from the former ruling triangle. Apple is facing difficult times and observers say the company lacks technical vision and must produce a major innovation in the next few years. Gassee had stormy relations with marketing and sales executives which made it difficult to coordinate product development and marketing strategies. Gassee also came under fire for ignoring the low-priced market and received much of the blame for the poor showing of Apple's new portable computer.

Apple names Spindler to new position of operating chief; Loren resigns post
Article Abstract:
In a management shake-up, Apple Computer Inc named Michael H. Spindler to the post of chief operating officer while at the same time announcing the expected resignation of Apple USA Pres Allan Z. Loren. Spindler has been the head of Apple's European operations where the division reported a 40 percent increase in sales in FY 1989. Analysts say the appointment of Spindler is a good move because he has one of the best marketing minds in the business. Marketing is one area where Apple has had difficulties in recent times, particularly with new products like its portable computer. No reason is being given for Loren's resignation, but analysts feel that his unpopularity with other Apple staffers and US computer dealers may have resulted in the decision.

Apple picks Spindler as chief for rough days ahead
Article Abstract:
On Friday, Jun 18, 1993, Apple's board elected Michael Spindler to succeed John Sculley as CEO. Sculley will stay on as chairman, focusing his attentions on building alliances with other companies. Apple's management change comes at a time of extreme competition in the microcomputer industry. Companies are cutting prices to maintain market share, and profits are diminishing. Industry observers say Spindler faces the task of reducing Apple's administrative, marketing, and research and development outlays by one-third to one-half. Five to 20 percent of the company's 15,000 employees will probably be laid off. Apple's stock lost 25 cents on Jun 18, closing at $41.
