Are we ignoring countertrade?
Article Abstract:
Increases in countertrading practices is expected to further accelerate as opportunities for transactions with Eastern Europe, China and Russia continue to expand. Accordingly, accountants should master the appropriate auditing procedures for complicated nonmonetary trading. However, such task is hampered by the absence of classification, valuation and reporting standards for these kind of transactions. Furthermore, disclosure procedures may prove to be insufficient in accounting for different activities involved in countertrading. Information regarding existing nonmonetary transaction practices should thus be studied through extensive research programs. For its part, the Financial Accounting Standards Board should set much-needed standards for accounting policies regarding countertrade transactions.
