Assessing the R&D capability of the Japanese pharmaceutical industry
Article Abstract:
The research and development (R&D) capability of nine major Japanese pharmaceutical companies was determined. Data show that Takeda, Fujisawa and Sankyo maintain standards that are at par with Western firms. This can be attributed to the companies' ample investments in R&D. Although Yamanouchi allocates considerable funds for R&D, its concentration on higher-risk therapeutic areas has resulted to less profits. Factors that have been found to affect R&D in the Japanese pharmaceutical industry are managerial skills, organizational culture, regulatory changes and the quality of the company's R&D.

Determinants of technology cycle time in the U.S. pharmaceutical industry
Article Abstract:
The determinants of technology cycle time in the American pharmaceutical industry during the 1977-1991 timeframe are examined. Results show that faster technology cycle time is positively correlated to the firms' knowledge base levels, the breadth of their knowledge bases, size, and age. However, it is negatively correlated to advertising spending and the fraction of US firm sales to total sales. Most importantly, faster technology cycle time is observed in firms that primarily develop new knowledge in-house while slower cycle time is seen in externally reliant firms.

From the inside: scientists' own experience of good (and bad) management
Article Abstract:
Five years of data garnered from Asia, Europe, and the United States reveal insights into what constitutes good and bad leadership. Good managers are described as compassionate, rather than the anticipated description of being technically competent, while bad managers are described as abusive. Continued gender inequity is also noted.
