Automating the balanced scorecard
Article Abstract:
An automated Balanced Scorecard is a helpful tool that managers can use to determine the overall performance of their organizations. This approach creates a comprehensive picture of performance by using both financial and nonfinancial categories, including customer loyalty, employee knowledge and quality. The basic elements of an effective automated Balanced Scorecard system are business intelligence, text processing and Internet technology. To ensure its success, it should be implementable at all levels of the organization and easy to use. It should also offer comprehensive analytics, feature an open network architecture and guarantee centralized security. It should also be integrated with other systems, including online transaction processing systems, enterprise resource planning systems, data warehouses, data marts and analytical applications.

Automating cash applications yields dividends
Article Abstract:
IN-SINK-ERATOR (ISE) has successfully automated its remittance processing system. In the past, this company, which is a division of Emerson Electric, was compelled to manually input deductions to balance the remittance, which can be a painstaking and time-consuming process. However, with the use of the PC-based software CashApply developed by Accounts Receivable Processing Co., ISE was able to post cash within a day of receipt by the bank instead of the four or five days it took previously. Moreover, its people can now process remittances in just 30 to 45 minutes, thereby freeing them to concentrate on collection activities. As a result of the automation, ISE can now perform more electronic data interchange capabilities and remove the logjam caused by the company's terms of sale.

Automating time and attendance
Article Abstract:
Tissue paper products manufacuturer Scott Paper discarded its mechanical time clocks in favor of ShopKeeper, an automated time and attendance system. The automated data collection sytem from ASA International Ltd was chosen out of Scott Paper's need to unify its payroll system and preference for dealing with a single vendor. The consolidation spared the company from considerable expenses by making its payroll and accounting operations more efficient. ShopKeeper was integrated into the information system network which also includes other vital applications. The system allows more employee interaction, increases productivity and improves payroll information accuracy. Scott Paper's 2,500 workers will use the system by June 1992.
