Some of Australia's biggest banks, in particular the big four banks, want to combine their back-office processing work, but critics are cautious and fear that this will be a merger by stealth, as it would slash costs and threaten thousands of jobs. However, improving efficiency and redesigning or automating processes can achieve cost savings, which means the inevitable sacking of workers worldwide.
