Steve Ballmer was named president of Microsoft Corp. in a move that will allow chairman and chief executive Bill Gates to concentrate on the company's products and technology while Mr. Ballmer focuses on business operations. Mr. Ballmer had been credited with creating a strong sales and marketing division in his former capacity as executive vice-president. Mr. Gates intends to spend much of his time on extending the company's Windows technology, including the development of voice recognition software.

Novell earnings beat estimates, as company continues recovery
