Passenger service workers unionize at United Airlines
Article Abstract:
About 19,000 United Airlines passenger service workers, which includes reservation takers, gate agents and ticket sellers, voted to become members of the International Association of Machinists union. Industry analysts are calling the vote, which followed a year-long campaign at 16 reservation centers and in 133 cities, the biggest unionization victory in the private sector in two decades. United Airlines has 80,000 employees, thousands of whom are low-paid passenger service workers who sought to capitalize on the company's high profits.

Nike critic praises gains in air quality at Vietnam factory
Article Abstract:
Nike's shoe factory in Vietnam was given a passing grade for improvements over the deplorable conditions found there 18 months ago by Dara O'Rourke, an environmental researcher at UC-Berkeley. The factory uses the far-less toxic water-based chemicals instead of the petroleum-based chemicals it used to use exclusively. Noise and heat are still conditions that need attention, according to O'Rourke. The company now even invites inspection of its 36 other shoe factories in Asia.

Article Abstract:
Bell Atlantic has been negotiating to end a strike initiated recently by 73,000 telephone workers. Both sides are reported to be eager to end the strike and not have a repeat of the 17-week strike by Nynex employees. Bell Atlantic has agreed to contract language that would set stronger limits on the company's use of nonunion workers. Company officials said that management is expected to pick up the slack by working 12 hour days to keep customer inconvenience to a minumum.
