Article Abstract:
The outlook for the industry is uncertain. December 1999 earnings for the industry were hidden due to costs for expense reduction and merging operation programs. Since the economy remains healthy, the need for loans and other bank services will remain high. Revenue growth in the coming years will be challenged by nonbank financial competitors. Investors are advised to concentrate on those banks showing income growth and cost reduction programs.

Article Abstract:
Stocks in the machinery industry are not expected to be timely in 1999, as demand for these products should ease in the US during the year. The Asian and Pacific Rim economies have not yet begun to recover, and Brazil's economy is weakening, but this is not expected to influence the industry as European markets seem to be doing well. There are a number of good stocks in this industry but investors need to be selective.
