Bank industry
Article Abstract:
Most US banks had good earnings during the 3rd qtr of 1996, in spite of the assessments on banks which have required thrifts to recapitalize the thrift industry deposit insurance fund. However, loan loss reserve provisions and the slower growth in loan activity, along with other factors, contributed to a general moderation in earnings. Merger activity is expected to increase and investors must keep this in mind before making stock purchases.

Article Abstract:
Bank earnings for the 1st qtr of 1996 are good and interest income will likely increase through 1997, although there will be some pressure on profit margins. Operating expense ratios are lower for most banks, but credit card losses and problem loans are rising, and competition from non-bank financial services is also increasing. Investors need to focus on bank stocks with good revenue streams and cost management programs.
