Banks like Bankers Trust are aligning their domestic operations with the global strategies of their parent companies. More mergers are expected, and Macquarie Bank, Bankers Trust, and Merrill Lynch may be influential in Australia in the immediate future.

Will institutions take the kangaroo route?

"Kangaroo bond" issuance is expected to increase in 1998. They are fix-interest securities issued in the domestic market by foreign governments and corporations. Australia's fixed-interest shortfall, estimated at A$80 billion, will drive kangaroo bonds forward. Although corporate bonds will partly fill the gap, analysts predict they will be insufficient.
