Bankers' mating dance gets serious
Article Abstract:
Pressure on investment banks to increase margins has not brought salaries down, but that may only be temporary, as investment banks continue to bypass financial services and consolidate the business in-house. Banks like Bankers Trust are aligning their domestic operations with the global strategies of their parent companies. More mergers are expected, and Macquarie Bank, Bankers Trust, and Merrill Lynch may be influential in Australia in the immediate future.

Corporate Australia: who's in charge?
Article Abstract:
The boards of Australian corporations are not held in high regard. The members are selected from a tight network with little diversity in background or age. Boards have become honorary rather than a group of people who set strategies for management. The quality is not good and mostly lawyers, accountants and bankers make up boards.
