Sticks and stones can hurt, but bad words pay; makers of Web filterst fight over carefully compiled, closely held lists of blocked words
Article Abstract:
Royal Oak Software, maker of Web filter Cybersitter, considers filing suit against Clickchoice Corp.over use of proprietary information. Web filters block access to Web sites containing content deemed unsuitable for children. Royal Oak alleges that Clickchoice's program is based on a list of words and sites that Royal Oak developed 2 years ago. Such lists are compiled by company researchers reviewing Web sites garnered from automated searches. They are usually encrypted to protect a company's investment in gathering and keeping current the information. Organizations opposing censorship, such as libraries and the A.C.L.U., would like to be able to review these lists.

Just keep those letters coming
Article Abstract:
Computer users face a growing challenge to manage their e-mail messages, as evidenced by one writer's upgrade to Claris Emailer for Macintosh 2.0. The new software, for example, can confuse users by mixing commercial and personal needs. Junk mail can contain personal messages from friends, and commercial advertisements can interrupt personal messages. Claris Emailer 2.0's maximum storage of 571 messages can surprise users who have upgraded from Claris Emailer 1.0 with some 2,000 messages.
