Battered computer stocks could fall further
Article Abstract:
IBM could go down even further, say analysts, after the company releases bad news about its 2nd qtr outlook. Compaq Computer Corp is experiencing difficulties and so is Digital Equipment Corp (DEC). Industry observers cite various problems: the recession continues; business in Europe is weak; a strong US dollar has hurt overseas sales; and there are price wars in the microcomputer and workstation industries. A number of analysts believe that some companies could soon see better times, but generally speaking, bulls are scarce. There is a 'domino effect,' notes one analyst, who says that when a big company encounters bad times, other companies soon encounter them too.

Industrial stocks are down 14.75 as IBM leads blue chips lower
Article Abstract:
A decline in IBM stocks caused a fall of stocks of other companies such as General Motors, Aluminum Co and Sears Roebuck. The Dow Jones closed down 14.75 points, at 2871.65. IBM estimates reduced profit margins at 51 to 53 percent, significantly lower than previous estimates. The stock market often takes its cues from IBM. Trends can be traced from in financial statistics reported from other companies. One of the few areas of sustained growth comes from pollution-management companies such as browning-Ferris Industries and Waste Management. Both companies' stocks have increased in recent days. Transportation stocks are down.
