Beer war goes upmarket

Premium beer sales in Australia are on the rise, and that translates into profits for both of the country's large and competitive brewers: Carlton and United Breweries Ltd. (CUB) and Lion Nathan Ltd. On decline from 1990 to 1996, beer sales in 1999 to September are up 1.2%. Premium beers represent 6% of national consumption with sales up 20% since September 1998. Lion is attempting to break into the solid Victorian market of CUB.
