Bell Atlantic revamps units, creates new office, but changes may be moot
Article Abstract:
Bell Atlantic Corp has announced a restructuring involving the creation of 6 business units and the appointment of a new chairman, but continues to expect that its $52 bil merger with GTE Corp will be complete by Aug 1999. The restructuring is scheduled to finish by Dec 1998, and gives former Nynex executive Ivan G. Seidenberg the chairmanship when Raymond W. Smith retires. Original Bell Atlantic executives Lawrence T. Babbio and James G. Cullen will share the presidency and former Nynex executive Frederic V. Salerno will be the CFO. Under the merger proposal with GTE, however, Seidenberg will share power with GTE Chaiman Charles R. Lee, and the fate of other executives is not yet clear.
