Big carriers join the battle for Internet phone traffic
Article Abstract:
The major Australian telephone carriers are joining the battle to provide telephone-based Internet services. The technology now exists to make phone calls via the Internet, and three international direct-providers, AAPT, GlobalOne, and Primus now are offering Internet phone service to the US and the UK for approximately 40 cents per minute at off times versus the Optus/Telstra rate of 70 cents per minute.

An online services industry analyst forecasts that two-thirds of all Internet service providers in Australia will be acquired by 1999. Microplex Dir-Sales/Marketing Steve Engle sees acquiring other Internet service providers as a viable technique for boosting growth and market share.
