'Baby Bells' see better chance of gaining access to new markets with GOP-controlled Congress
Article Abstract:
The Regional Bell Operating Companies (RBOC) plan to lobby the Republican-controlled Congress to let them compete in the long-distance telephone market. The RBOCs also want to be allowed to offer their local telephone subscribers video programming. Lobbyists for the RBOCs report legislators plan to include a definite timetable for RBOCs to enter the long-distance telephone market into any deregulation bill. Industry insiders report that if the RBOCs win the support of AT&T in their quest for long-distance telephone business the legislation will be passed quickly. The RBOCs are using a study they commissioned in 1993 that reported 3.6 million jobs would be created if all telecommunication regulations were removed. Long-distance companies have hired their own lobbyists to open the local telephone markets to competition, too.

AT&T-McCaw link stuns Baby Bells
Article Abstract:
AT and T's announcement that it will invest in McCaw Cellular Communications Inc startles the Bell regional operating companies. Since the breakup of AT and T in 1984, the company has specialized in long-distance service, while the Baby Bells have specialized in local phone service. But now the Baby Bells face the prospect that AT and T may eventually control the burgeoning market for cellular phone services. The prospect of new competition means that the Baby Bells will have to step up their efforts to deliver new services. The Baby Bells are almost certain to lobby harder in Congress for permission to enter the long-distance market. With almost all ordinary phone calls still routed through local phone companies, however, regulators are unlikely to ease up on the restrictions on the Baby Bells.
