Books chain looks overseas to cover itself against GST
Article Abstract:
Australian book chain Dymocks Group may be moving its Internet retailing operations to New Zealand to avoid the goods and services taxes (GST). In Australia, a 10% GST will be assessed on books beginning July 1, 1999. The GST does not apply to books purchased from overseas Internet sites. With a GST, Dymocks is unable to compete with American online booksellers such as Amazon. com Inc. Although the online operations account for only 1% of Dymocks' business, it has doubled since 1998.
