Building a joint venture in China: the case of Chrysler and the Beijing Jeep Corporation
Article Abstract:
The joint venture of Chrysler Corp and Beijing Automotive Works resulting in the creation of Beijing Jeep Corp provides insights into the stringent direct foreign investment policies in China and the extent of control exerted by the Chinese Government on state enterprises. Foreign enterprises intent on establishing Sino-foreign partnerships should take heed of the experiences of Chrysler in that such partnerships cannot be regarded as serious global strategies as long as the Chinese Government continues to manipulate the operations environment of joint ventures. Foreign firms that choose to operate in such government-controlled manufacturing environments can facilitate continued operational profitability by linking their China platforms to a production system that sources a substantial portion of its parts from imports. Guidelines to foreign investment in China are also provided.

UK/US collaborative exploitation of the European market
Article Abstract:
The demographics of successful linkage of UK firms with US companies were culled from a survey of 139 firms. The survey showed that improved market performance including increased total revenues, strengthened market position, expanded customer base and competitiveness can be derived from the cooperation of US and UK firms. The UK firms usually acted as distributors or agents for the US companies which can provide specialist products or services suitable for the higher end of the European market particularly for the industrial sector. These American products or services are usually offered at competitive prices especially when presented in the relatively price-insensitive high performance/high quality sector.
