New owners of Byte suspend publication
Article Abstract:
CMP Media shelved publication of Byte, the prestigious but struggling computer magazine it acquired in May 1998. The move included laying off 74 of 85 employees at Byte, which will change its format after its current Jul 1998 issue. Byte since 1975 has targeted sophisticated technology articles to an audience that includes technical professionals. Circulation has declined from 522,795 in 1996 to a recent average of 442,553. Byte published only 61.5 pages of advertising in its Jan 1998 issue, which represented less than 50% of its 1996 total. A CMP executive said Byte, with a revamped business model and editorial focus, probably will return in the fall of 1998. Editors expected CMP Media, which had purchased Byte and three other computer publications from McGraw-Hill, to strengthen the publication.
