COGENT: on the wings of IDEAS
Article Abstract:
Cogent Information Systems head Robin Hodgkins explains that his company's history is divided into two stages. During the 1980s phase, the main work at Cogent is focused on the development of custom finance and manufacturing systems based on Prime Computer. In the 1990s, the company is now concentrated on making accounting systems called IDEAS (International and Domestic Enhanced Accounting System) and FMS (Financial Management System) which are both PC-based. Since this shift, Cogent is now involved not only in financial systems consultancy but also in financial systems development. Hodgkins believes that what set his company apart from competitors are vision and focus, and always avoiding to produce generic solutions. He is currently trying to engender in Cogent the M-6 philosophy, which stands for Multinational, Multicurrency, Multicompany, Multipartner, Multilingual and Microsoft.

Seeking the best solution
Article Abstract:
Best Programs Pres. and CEO Tim Davenport explains that his company concentrated on tax software development in its early history before deciding to expand its offerings. The software vendor now produces not only accounting software but also programs devoted to fixed assets, human resources and payroll activities. Its main strategic target is the middle market which Davenport claims is not highly competitive at the moment. Best Programs Inc. has partnered with such accounting vendors as Solomon, Great Plains, Geac, Timberline, CYMA and Platinum. These companies either resell the products of Best Programs or joint market them. The company is also starting to develop new relationships with client/server vendors because it has entered the client/server market.

Solomon Software runs on faith
Article Abstract:
Solomon Software CEO Gary Harpst professes that his business is a reflection of his religious faith. Along with co-founders Jack Ridge and Vernon Strong, Harpst, who is a born-again Christian, started The Lord's Business, the parent company of Solomon Software Inc., and named it as such to remind them why they started the company, which is to serve God. Harpts says that the company also guides him to follow the path of honesty and integrity in everything he does. However, he confesses that it has sometimes been difficult for him to reconcile his spiritual needs and business responsibilities. For example, he had to layoff some people when he was downsizing his company, a decision that did not come easy for him.
