Intel offering of multimedia chip could lift disappointing PC sales
Article Abstract:
Intel will introduce its Pentium Processor with MMX Technology, a microprocessor that will enhance PC graphics capabilities, on Jan 8, 1997. The MMX microprocessor's increased memory and its new instruction set, which converts 64-bit processes into four concurrent 16-bit processes, will increase PC speed. It will be available in 160, 200, 150 and 166MHz versions. Some industry experts claim that Intel's announcement of this product in Mar 1996 caused poor PC sales in Dec 1996, as consumers deferred their purchases until the MMX became available. Experts now feel that the new microprocessor will boost computer sales. IBM, Compaq Computer and Dell Computer are among the manufacturers who will produce PCs with MMX chips. In the second half of 1997, Intel will release its accelerated graphics port on high-performance Pentium Pros systems, which will expand memory bandwidth to 500 MBps.

Motorola to build a chip plant in Virginia: Power PC demand could increase with range of applications
Article Abstract:
Motorola plans to build a $3 billion plant near Richmond, VA to manufacture Power PC microprocessor chips. Building will begin in 1996, with 1998 being the target year for production. Demand for the Power PC chips is being driven by Apple, which uses the chips in their Power Macintosh computers. The chips will become even more popular as 'embedded control' versions become available. The embedded chips will appear in cars, appliances and consumer electronics products. The new plant can easily be modified to produce other chips if Power PC demand is lower than expected. Motorola faces unexpected competition from IBM, which started selling its own Power PC chips. Motorola also faces internal competition, with three different architectures for embedded control chips. This kind of internal competition has previously adversely affected Motorola chips.

Reports of bug in new Pentium chip appear on Internet
Article Abstract:
Intel is scheduled to release a new Pentium II microprocessor while reports are circulating on the Web that the new chip contains a bug that causes errors in certain complex mathematical calculations. The new microprocessor is a version of the Pentium Pro, the chip is incorporated with new multimedia technology and is more advanced than the orignal Pentium. Mr. Robert Collins a Silicon Valley engineer was the first to disclose the bug at his Web site, Intel Secrets, after being tipped off by an anonymous college professor. A spokesperson for Intel said that the company would publish information about the bug if it could be confirmed. Mr. Collins has found what appears to be a bug in the floating point unit of Intel's new Pentium II processor.
