Cabinet member quits over Korea remarks

Japan's Management and Coordination Agency chief Takami Eto resigned on Nov 13, 1995, after he suggested that Korea benefitted from the 1910-45 Japanese occupation. The remarks caused increased tension between the two nations, and Japanese Premier Tomiichi Murayama apologized to Korea on Nov 14, 1995.

Cabinet splits over identity checks

France's National Assembly debated whether to institute new rules allowing police to check the identity papers of people who are suspected of being illegal aliens. The current rules allow identity checks only if the person has committed a crime. Other immigration news is also included.

Afghanistan leader names temporary cabinet

Afghanistan interim pres Sibghatullah Mojadidi appointed 36 members of a temporary cabinet, including Ahmed Shah Massoud as defense minister. Eight more cabinet posts were left open as an invitation to the Party of Islam to join the coalition government.
