Call-Net Enetprises to buy Fonorola for $1.21 bil in cash and stock

Canadian long-distance carrier Fonorola Inc. agreed to be acquired by rival Call-Net Enterprises Inc. for 67 Canadian dollars (US$45.69) a share, or a total of C$1.78 billion (US$1.21 billion), in cash and stock, ending a two-month takeover battle. "This transaction will accelerate Call-Net's growth as the leading alternative long-distance telecomunications company in Canada," said Juri Koor, the company's chairman, president and chief executive. The acquisition represents the first in what analysts expect will be a number of mergers in Canada's crowded telecommunications field.

More U.K. power generators weigh buying electricity-supply businesses

United Kingdom power generating companies are again considering purchases of electricity-supply operations now that PowerGen PLC has cleared regulatory hurdles in its acquisition of East Midlands Electricity PLC. Supplier London Electricity PLC has two potential buyers, British Energy PLC and National Power PLC. British Energy is also said to be interested in Yorkshire Electricity PLC. National Power has shown a new willingness to comply with regulators by considering voluntarily disposing of its coal-fired plants, a shift from August 1998.

AmerGen to acquire GPU's working unit at Three Mile Island
Article Abstract:
AmerGen Energy Co. has reached an agreement to acquire GPU Inc.'s one operational nuclear power plant in Three Mile Island, Pennsylvannia. AmerGen will pay $100 million for the unit. This is AmerGen's first acquisition. The company was created in 1997 as part of a joint venture between Peco Energy Corp. and British Energy PLC. The nuclear plant was constructed in the 1970's by GPU at a $1.25 billion cost.
