The 1996 Research Assessment Exercise for business and management
Article Abstract:
The 1996 Research Assessment Exercise for UK universities involved peer review by panels of subject specialists using evidence supplied by universities on standard forms. The business and management panel had 12 full members and two assessors, along with several advisors who were not entitled to vote. The panel looked at 100 submissions from 96 universities, involving a total of more than 2,300 research active staff and some 8,000 pieces of cited work. It was clear that many of the new universities have a strong teaching presence in business and management, but undertake relatively little research.

The use of native categories in management research
Article Abstract:
A study into the viability of using the concept of native categories in research into British management tried to combine the methodologies of a social anthropologist with those of an economist. The researchers have tried to use the concept of native categories and apply them to three management concepts; the company, the transaction and core business. In social anthropology, native categories are understood to refer to socially derived words and classifications found in every society. Economists use their own categories which do not relate to cultural aspects.

UK international joint ventures with the Triad: evidence for the 1990s
Article Abstract:
Researchers investigated the nature of international joint ventures (IJVs) involving UK companies and partners in Western Europe, North America or Japan during the period 1990-1996. These areas form the developed market economy Triad, and partnerships are different from those involving companies in developing regions. The research indicated a number of trends in UK IJVs including more involvement with Western European partners, with just one partner, and in the service sector.
