Can ABC bring mixed results?
Article Abstract:
The activity-based costing (ABC) program at the Colorado Springs Div. of Hewlett-Packard was not as successful as anticipated. The ABC approach was implemented with the aim of evaluating its production and support processes for better product costing and inventory valuation. The ABC system was introduced in Nov. 1982 but was terminated in the summer of 1992. The failure of the ABC initiative can be traced back to the fact that it involved too many cost drivers, lacked proper administration, did not include a follow-through and focused excessively on consensus. These prevented the division from determining the real value of its product through inventory valuation. ABC success in the future will require clear goals, simple tracking methods, internal and external customer partnership, and consistent follow-through.

Accounting for remote locations
Article Abstract:
Point of sale (POS) computers can be used to strengthen management control over remote locations where the frequent mode of payment is cash. This is particularly useful for a fast food restaurant chain. Pizza Hut Inc's experience with the use of POS systems at one its remote franchises is a case in point. Pizza Hut management decided to use the POS system to strengthen its control over sales, cost of sales, and payroll. It was also used to improve budgeting, labor forecasting, and analysis of sales mix. Overall, the use of the POS system resulted in improved customer service and higher sales.
