Canopener utility adds new gadgets for a Mac
Article Abstract:
Abbott Systems offers a set of desktop utilities for Macintoshes that are an attractive alternative to bloated software suites. The $29 Kaleidescope graphics imaging utility creates fractals and allows users to manipulate the speed, color and type of motion of the changing image. The images may be saved as screensavers. The $29 Calc+ 2.0 calculator is more flexible than the Macintosh calculator and supports a scrolling display, memory keys and spaces for annotations. The $19.95 Scorpio word processor provides spell checking, various typefaces and other standard word processing functions. The $29 Findall file maintenance utility finds and numbers files, then provides additional details about each file. The $29 Rescuetxt disaster recovery software helps find lost files, and the $49 Dduper DBMS utility deletes duplicate database files. The $20 Chesire 2.0 presentation software creates all types of charts and has excellent documentation.

What you need to do what you need to do
Article Abstract:
Wizardworks Group's Compuworks Office for Windows provides users with the functionality of programs such as a word processor, spreadsheet and PIM in one inexpensive module. Compuworks Office requires barely 7MB of disk space and is available at major retail outlets for around $60. The word processing module in Compuworks has the look and feel of a traditional Windows program complete with pull-down menus. The program's Data Filer database manager lets the user create multiple forms for myriad purposes, while its Report Writer function organizes the database information neatly into columnar format. Storage management programs allow the user to clean up a hard drive, increasing its capacity for new files. Remove-It from Verisoft Systems Inc presents the user with a screen image of what is stored on the hard disk. Files can be deleted by an Express method, where decisions are made by the computer, or manually by the user.

Learning to live with Windows 95
Article Abstract:
Installing Windows 95 involves six hours and and unreasonable amount in toll calls to Microsoft. Installing Windows 95 over the Windows for Workgroups 3.11 operating system can lead to a blanking of the screen, with no indication that any processing is taking place. Installing over the DOS 6.22 operating system can result in data showing up on a hard drive in a reformatted and scanned form. For technical support, users must call during West Coast business hours, not always convenient for those that work during the day. A voice-mail system finally yields human help, but even reconfiguring the autoexec.bat and config.sys file cannot get Windows 95 loaded. Windows 95 will eventually install over DOS after more tweaking of the same files.
