Chairman Don Kirk leaves FASB stronger
Article Abstract:
Donald J. Kirk has been chairman of the Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) for nine years. During this time, he has guided the FASB to a position of increased respectability and acceptance, in spite of occasional friction by those in power. The attributes that make Kirk such an effective leader are: a special leadership style that involves motivating instead of ordering Board members, openly communicating and convincing other Board members with logic rather than with power, a deep understanding of technical issues, an ability to quickly and completely analyze complex issues, tolerance of others' views, long working hours, and interaction with staff members. Despite of his varied duties, he leaves time for community and family activities.

Successful managers also like to network, and many take advantage of organizations such as the Turnaround Management Association (Chapel Hill, NC). The association helps managers involved in turnarounds with a large database of turnaround case studies which managers can access. The association is currently working on establishing qualifications for the industry.
