How Chinese managers learn
Article Abstract:
Management education in China continues despite the political and economic repercussions of Tiananmen Square. There are over 300 higher education schools of management in China. The U.S., Canada, western Europe and Japan are helping in training Chinese managers in western managerial methods. There are cultural, political and economic problems in educating Chinese managers. The values of Chinese culture should be considered in transmitting western methods to Chinese students. Teaching in China requires experience in cross-cultural education and knowledge of the Chinese educational environment. The shift from central planning to a market system has been stalled due to the effects of Tiananmen Square. Western management systems emphasize managerial accountability and decentralization of economic decision-making. These systems are incompatible with market intervention and centralized control of economic activity.

How Japanese managers learn
Article Abstract:
Japanese management training is influenced largely by corporate tradition, organizational structure, the nature of the business, and the organization's inherent training and development resources. The interplay of various factors in Japan's corporate recruitment and training procedures comes as a result of the Japanese people's determined pursuit of higher education and the infusion of Western management practices into Japanese corporate culture. A high standard of higher education with a generalist orientation and the stringent selection procedures of Japanese firms mark the Japanese model of management training. Japanese Management Association, the Japan Productivity Centre and the Japan Union of Scientists and Engineers are the key institutions providing formal management training to Japanese professionals.
