Chemical (basic) industry
Article Abstract:
Profits and margins for the US chemical industry are expected to be hurt for the rest of 1999 due to the decline in demand for chemicals in Asia and large industry capacity and resulting oversupply. The possible slow growth of the US economy in 1999 could also hurt profits and the high value of the US dollar is a hindrance to chemical exports, as well. Poor earnings in 1999 and the year 2000 should preclude investors from commitments to this industry, but some stocks may have appeal for the longer term.
