Childish pursuits pay at Broderbund, home of Carmen Sandiego
Article Abstract:
Broderbund Software Inc is a highly successful publisher of educational software. Since going public in 1991, the company's stock has climbed from $11 to $41. Broderbund's two most popular products are Print Shop, for making banners, greeting cards and other items, and Carmen Sandiego, in which a thief imparts history and geography lessons as she travels through time and around the world. Broderbund's Early Learning Products, for three- to 10-year-olds, posted strong growth in 1992. Children playing with items in Broderbund's new CD-ROM-based Living Book series can enter and change the story line. On occasion Broderbund will acquire a program from another developer, like Kid Pix, which was originally written by an art professor. The company tests new products with employees' children and nearby schoolchildren.

Borland reports loss for quarter, cites acquisition
Article Abstract:
Borland International Inc cites costs related to its acquisition of Ashton-Tate Corp as the reason behind its disappointing 4th qtr 1991 results. Borland's 4th qtr results include an unexpected $30 million charge associated with severance and facilities costs, particularly for international operations. Fourth quarter results feature a net loss of $26.9 million compared with a net profit of $2.8 million for the same period a year ago. Revenue for the quarter also fell, from $135.9 million to $116.8 million. The additional charge associated with the acquisition brings the cost of acquiring Ashton-Tate to $140 million, on top of the $440 million that Borland paid for the company. The extra charges caught most analysts off guard. For FY 1991, Borland posts a net loss of $110.4 million.
