China conducts military tests north of Taiwan; tests seen as intimidation tactic

China conducted artillery and missile tests from Aug 15-25, 1995, in the East China Sea, 90 miles away from Taiwan. China had previously tested ballistic missiles in the same region from Jul 21-26, 1995. The tests may be an attempt to intimidate Taiwanese Pres Lee Teng-hui.

Mexico's ruling PRI was criticized for soliciting donations from wealthy Mexican businessmen at a fund-raising dinner held Feb 23, 1993. Although legal, the solicitation caused doubt about President Carlos Salinas de Gortari's commitment to open and competitive elections.

PRI candidate Emilio Chuayffet Chemor won 57.9% of the vote in gubernatorial elections in Mexico state on Jul 4, 1993. PRI candidate Rigoberto Ochoa Zaragoza won 57.7% of the vote in Nayarit. Salinas planned to make democratic reforms in Mexico.
