China conducts nuclear tests: Japan cuts aid in protest
Article Abstract:
China announced Aug 17, 1995, that it had conducted an underground nuclear weapons test. Seismologists believe the test occurred around Lop Nor, Xinjiang. Japan cut off foreign aid to China on Aug 29, 1995, in protest of the test. China says it will halt testing when a worldwide ban is imposed.

France conducts second nuclear test: new wave of protests follows
Article Abstract:
On Oct 2, 1995, France held a second series of nuclear tests under Fangataufa atoll in the Pacific. Diplomatic protests as well as street protest such as the ones in Tahiti, were held. In spite of the protests, the UN's International Court on Sept 22, 1995, declined to ban the testing.

NATO picks Spain's Solana as Secretary General; foreign minister is compromise choice
Article Abstract:
Javier Solana was selected by ministers of NATO as the new secretary general since Willy Claes resigned in Oct 1995. Two other candidates were desired by different member countries, and Solana was a choice accepted by all despite his membership in Spain's socialist party.
