China's management training at the crossroads
Article Abstract:
China has made a major effort to increase management training since 1985. Research examines the national examination system and management training innovations and enterprise reforms in Sichuan province. The government is making great efforts to develop and train as many new managers as possible in as short a time as possible; however, their efforts are slowed by confusion about the economic reforms and a lack of qualified teachers.

Leadership in the miners' union: Arthur Scargill's rise to power
Article Abstract:
Miners' union leader Arthur Scargill was a central figure in the 1984-1985 British miners' strike. Scargill developed a charismatic and un compromising management style that served him well in his rise to power and during the strike crisis. However, with the strike resolved, such a style could be vulnerable both to criticism and recriminations within the miners' union.
