Ciena's results buck telecom-equipment trend

Ciena Corp.'s second quarter revenue was $425.4 million and profit of $65.4 million, 20 cents per share, which was triple that of year-end results. The company also replaced Patrick Nettles as CEO, who will stay on as chairman, with Gary Smith. The strong results point to telecommunication service providers need still for products that help them cut costs. But Ciena noted that it is looking toward a monstrous price war with bigger companies.

Lucent faces obstacles raising financing
Article Abstract:
Lucent Technologies is struggling to raise $6.5 billion by Feb. 22. Poor earnings and an accounting investigation forced the company to consider radical restructuring last month and some analysts believe the company can raise the cash with an extended deadline. If they don't, Lucent's stock image will erode even more, as will it's stock and credit rating.

Lucent plans to put optical fiber unit, one of its bright spots, on auction block

Lucent Technologies Inc. is planning on putting up one of its best units up for sale. The telecommunications equipment concern's Optical Fiber Solutions unit is the second largest producer of fiber-optic cable next to Corning Inc.
