Cisco's net for quarter surged 61% as firm continued to dominate market
Article Abstract:
Cisco Systems's 2nd qtr 1997 income surged 61%, to $338.5 million, and revenue grew 71% to $1.6 billion. Cisco is the market leader in the networking equipment industry; the company makes the routers, hubs, switches and related software that maintain and manage electronic traffic. It is third in market capitalization on NASDAQ, behind Microsoft and Intel, at $43 billion. Approximately 85% of the routers currently in use in global systems are made by Cisco. While analysts expect the networking industry to grow by 30 to 50%, some uncertainties have pushed stock prices down in recent days. Cisco is only beginning to benefit from a series of 1996 acquisitions, including its purchase of StrataCom, which is performing extremely well. Cisco dominates the router market, but is competing with 3Com and Bay Networks in the LAN switching equipment industry. Cisco has developed its tag switching technology to counter IBM and Cascade Communications' joint IP Switching technology initiative.

Cyberspace war rages over Diana Corp.'s Technology; stock sinks amid Internet criticism that switching device is unproved
Article Abstract:
Short sellers are using Internet stock discussion forums to manipulate stock prices, as evidenced in the case of Internet switch manufacturer and meat product distribution company Diana Corp. On the promise of a largely untested but innovative Internet switch design produced by its Sattel Communications unit, Diana's stock catapulted upward in early 1996. Then, short sellers began using public stock discussion forums such as America Online's Motley Fool to criticize the company and its products. Such criticism can induce volatility from which short sellers can extract huge profits. Diana's diverse business involvements make it difficult to evaluate, and no securities analysts report on the company. Concentric Network is the first and only customer of the Sattel Communications DataNet switches, said to lessen modem and bandwidth requirements.

Company cafeterias create dinners to go
Article Abstract:
It's hard to believe dinners-to-go that can be ordered and picked up at work would not be a popular service for many employees. But such is the case at Merck & Co. in Pennsylvania. Take-home dinners are a big hit at Compaq Computers in Houston and at Hallmark in Missouri. It can help when unexpected guests will be a one's home after work, or it can be a treat from cooking or buying fast food. Seems like a benefit much like child care at the workplace.
