Netscape details meeting with Microsoft
Article Abstract:
Testimony at Microsoft's antitrust trial focused, on Oct 22, 1998, on Microsoft's decision to combine its Web browser with its Windows operating system. The lawsuit, filed by the Justice Department and 20 states, alleges that Microsoft has unlawfully promoted its operating-system monopoly and has attempted to extend its power to the Internet. During the third day of a cross examination conducted by Microsoft lawyer John Warden, Netscape CEO James Barksdale accused Microsoft of proposing an unlawful alliance to divide and dominate the market. Barksdale said the proposal came at a meeting on Jun 21, 1995. Warden asked Barksdale if anything was at issue other than a difference of opinion about where the line is separating an operating system and an application. Barksdale said a manufacturer of an operating system that controls 90% of the world's platforms and tries to add a browser has stepped across the line.

Microsoft seeks 'flame mail' at Netscape
Article Abstract:
Microsoft has subpoenaed archrival Netscape's 'flame mail' messages as part of its Sep 1998 antitrust defense. The Netscape flame mail consists of an internal electronic 'really bad attitude' forum, operated by young engineers, which criticized Netscape's workplace and products. Microsoft may plan to enter some of the bulletin board's most pointed messages into evidence at the trial, in an effort to demonstrate that Netscape management errors or inferior products eroded Netscape's Internet-browser share. The Government is charging Microsoft with monopolist tactics in the Internet-browser market. The Netscape engineers said the invitation-only forum, now discontinued, was not intended for viewing by outsiders. Netscape employees also use a second internal electronic forum, 'bad attitude,' to discuss issues ranging from rivals to cafeteria food.
