Cleric and followers convicted in U.N. bomb plot trial

Nine defendants along with the Sheik were convicted Oct 1, 1995 in NYC of seditious conspiracy, which can be used even if a defendant is not proved to have committed a specific act. They were convicted of forty-eight charges in all. They were charged with plotting to conduct urban terrorism in the US.

Sheik Omar Abdel Rahman received a sentence of life imprisonment, while nine of his followers received sentences between 25 years in prison and life imprisonment for plotting to plant bombs at the United Nations building and other prominent buildings in New York, NY, and assassinate politicians.

World Trade Center bombing: suspect nabbed in Pakistan
Article Abstract:
Authorities arrested and extradicted Yousef on Feb 7, 1995, in Islamabad, Pakistan, on charges that he participated in the Feb 26, 1993, World Trade Center bombing which killed six people. Yousef had been a fugitive since the bombing. Four others have been convicted in the bombing case.
