Clinton vetoes Commerce, Justice funds

A $27.3 billion appropriations bill for FY 1996 was vetoed by Pres Clinton on Dec 19, 1995. The president objected to cutbacks in funding for hiring new police officers. He also opposed the steep cuts to the Commerce Dept, including the elimination of the Advanced Technology Program.

Clinton outlines 10-year balanced-budget plan: seeks to protect education, health care
Article Abstract:
Pres Clinton submitted a budget on Jun 13, 1995, that would make $1.1 trillion in cuts over 10 years and balance the federal budget by 2005. Although cuts would be made in social programs such as Medicare, they would not be as extensive as the ones Republicans have proposed.

Clinton signs stopgap extension
Article Abstract:
Congress passed a continuing resolution on Mar 14, 1996, and Pres Clinton signed it the next day. The bill provides temporary government funding for one more month, while Congress and the president negotiate the yearly budget. The bill avoided another government shutdown.
