Close to you: companies are breaking up employee centers and setting up offices near areas where workers live
Article Abstract:
'Telework centers' are a new kind of office that experts believe will house many workers in coming years. Typically, a telework center is a neighborhood work depot that contains computers and communications equipment. Such depots can be located close to workers' homes, using 'electronic highways' to move information instead of concrete highways to move people in automobiles. Advocates believe that telework centers, operating as satellite offices, will be as important in the coming decentralization of business as the already-growing move toward working at home. Public and private employers use telework centers, and have found their employees more productive from the improvement in quality-of-life that working closer to home has brought about.

Bibliometric assessment of research performance in Flanders: policy background and implications
Article Abstract:
Research proposals in Belgian universities were usually evaluated only by one's professional colleagues. However, a more objective review system was needed since institutions of higher learning were subject to financial sanctions if they did not meet academic standards set down by Flemish law. Bibliometric analysis, which involves the quantitative evaluation of scientific and technical material, was adopted by Flemish universities as a more reliable and less subjective method of assessing their research output.

Spin-offs from research centers at a research university
Article Abstract:
Research undertaken among six of the 19 spin-offs from the 55 research centres at the University of New Mexico is presented. It was found that the relationship between a university-based parent organization and its spin-off can be beneficial for both sides. A potential area of conflict is intellectual property rights to a new technology being commercialized by the spin-off.
