Virgin to trade Web use for personal data

Virgin Entertainment Group will give 10,000 VirginConnect WebPlayer Internet appliances to those willing to have their shopping habits studied. Potential customers can fill out a questionnaire on www.virginconnectme.com and if they fill the Virgin profile, they'll receive a clean silver machine, keyboard, flat panel and 45K modem. The usual $50 annual Internet access fee will be waived the first year for those who don't mind many banner ads, e-mails from marketers and an interest in their e-commerce habits.

The CMi iCEBOX combines TV, Internet access and DVD player in one 40 pound unit designed for the kitchen counter. It has a rubberized water proof keyboard and can attach to a printer. The eNote TVemail box checks for email automatically. Users view and compose email on their TV with a wireless keyboard. The Netpliance i-Opener is a keyboard and screen which let's users surf the Web and compose email. Printer and mouse are optional. Cidco MailStation uses as phone line to give users email and limited news offerings via a small LCD panel unit with keyboard. The Qubit Wireless Web Tablet is a magazine-sized color LCD panel which links to the Web through base transmitter. The ePodsOne, another panel display device, uses the Windows CE OS. Optional keyboard and stand are recommended.

America Online cuts Mobile Communicator price

America Online is lowering its Mobile Communicator device price to $99.95 plus 29.95 monthly. Late last year the price was $329.95 and 19.95 a month. The electronic-mail gadget the size of a pager had been a sales bust among the 30 million subscribers. The company has tweaked the software so that e-mail is sent and received much faster. EarthLink and MSN have also marketed e-mail pagers to compete with the popular BlackBerry.
